What our graduates say

"Working for a smaller company has allowed me to get to know everyone in the office very quickly. I believe I am a firm member of the team after just 6 months. The variety of work I have done has been much wider than I was expecting and has already included attendance at a client meeting. We have regular training updates, support whenever it’s needed and everyone is approachable whatever level in the company they are. I have enjoyed several social events since joining the company, particularly the annual conference, the SIAS Ball and the Christmas party."

Katherine Hook Basingstoke

"'First Actuarial is a great place to work. It's a friendly and relaxed environment with plenty of opportunities to get involved in different aspects of pension consulting work."

Phil Kelly Leeds

"For me, First Actuarial is a fantastic place of work for an actuarial student. The Manchester office has a brilliant team, all of whom are either fully qualified or currently making their way up the exam-ladder. The work is challenging, and no two days are the same, especially because of the variety of clients that we work for, ranging from trade unions to housing associations and almost everything in between. I’ve found that everyone goes out of their way to help each other, especially if you’re new to the team like me!"

Natalie Ogden Manchester

"I find working with First Actuarial an extremely rewarding experience. Working within a compact team, I was given the opportunity to experience numerous aspects of actuarial work from the outset, resulting in rapidly building my knowledge base. The company takes an active interest in the wellbeing of their clients, and always strive to reach the most practical and financially viable solution wherever possible."

Graduate Vacancies

First Actuarial are a growing consultancy business which has built a significant stream of business and high regard in the UK pension arena. We offer a comprehensive range of services designed to meet the needs of pension scheme trustees and employers. We have an energetic board of founders, all of whom are qualified actuaries.

Established in 2004, we have since grown our team from 25 to over 170 people and now work across 5 offices located in Basingstoke, Leeds, Manchester, Peterborough and Tonbridge.

As a flexible employer with a flat and informal management structure, we offer the opportunity to develop a rewarding role very quickly. This may mean meeting clients, winning business or playing an influential role internally. You can be certain that you won’t be stuck in a narrow role doing the same work every day.

We encourage a relaxed and friendly working environment with a casual dress policy and flexible working hours.

Who are we looking to recruit?

We are looking for graduates with high academic achievements. Applications from those with strong results in maths, statistics, economics or similar we welcome. But we also encourage applicants from other disciplines provided they have a good A-Level (or equilvalent) in maths.

In addition, we expect you to:

  • Be able to accept responsibility at an early stage in your career
  • Be personally motivated
  • Have strong communication skills
  • Have an ability to tackle and solve problems

Professional development – study and training

We will give you full support to study for the Fellowship of the Institute and Faculty of Actuaries. Our current study package includes:

  • Exam success rewarded through pay rises
  • Payment for required study materials and tutorials
  • Up to 40 study days per year
  • Exam entry fees
  • Membership subscriptions for the Institute or Faculty of Actuaries

Ultimately you will require determination and self discipline to meet the demands of combining studying and working full time.

Shortly after starting at First Actuarial, you will attend an initial training day. This day is designed to introduce you to pensions in general and the work you will typically do. The day will also have a session on exam skills as the actuarial exams are very different from university exams. Most of your subsequent training will be on the job but we also run formal training courses throughout your career to assist with your development.

Our team structure will enable you to work directly (and learn from) experienced qualified actuaries in order to provide support in all areas of actuarial pensions consulting.
